Simone Cecilie Grytter
I am a PhD student at Medical Museion, Department of Public Health, Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences, University of Copenhagen. I have a background in Visual Anthropology from Goldsmiths University of London, and in European Ethnology from the University of Copenhagen.
In my PhD project, I investigate how seeing the inside of the human body influences understandings of the body and of disease. I approach the field from three perspectives: The patients’ perspective, the medical professionals’ and the broader public’s. My project moves between the clinical setting of the hospital, where I do ethnographic fieldwork among patients who are awake during surgery, and the space of the museum, where I work on how to collect and communicate the world of contemporary medicine and the human body.
