The European Union has now passed its regulation to establish the European Health Data Space (EHDS). With the EHDS, cross-border care is to be facilitated through shared digital infrastructures, the resulting data are to be made available for secondary purposes, and all suppliers of electronic healthcare record software are to use shared standards. Researchers will be allowed access to health data across the union since data sharing becomes mandatory. Simultaneously, they become obliged to share the health data they have themselves collected.
The EHDS will alter many practices and affect health services as well as medical research. In this roundtable, journalist Thomas Reintjes will ask a panel of different types of experts about what they expect of the EHDS and why they think we as researchers should care.
